塀の中の平均年齢が上昇の一途を辿り、“獄死”するケースが増える一方、岡山刑務所で支払われる刑務作業の報奨金は一般の刑務所の２倍以上、日本一賃金が高い刑務所となった。備前焼などで、達人の域に達する受刑者が出る。受刑者の布団は、熟練した技術で打ち直されるため、刑務所のイメージからは程遠い“ふかふか”。長期刑ゆえの“珍現象”も起きる。
